Congressman Steve Cohen on March 23, 2010 with resident Barack Obama at the Healthcare Reform Signing CeremonySunday, March 21, 2010 will go down in history as the day that the United States of America took a giant step towards providing all of its citizens with an opportunity that the more fortunate among us take for granted— the ability to see a doctor when they are sick.

Last Sunday was a century in the making, and I am proud to have taken part in winning the battle waged by Presidents Teddy Roosevelt, Harry Truman, John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter, and my friend Bill Clinton.

Thirty-two million uninsured Americans will finally have access to medical care. The insurance industry will no longer be allowed to refuse to cover you because of pre-existing medical conditions, nor will it be allowed to end your coverage if you fall ill. There will be no more annual or lifetime caps. It closes the doughnut hole in coverage for seniors. Children under the age of 26 will be covered by their parents’ health plans. And it provides incentives for young doctors to go into inner city family practice.

And for Tennessee’s 9th District, this bill provides not only a pay structure that will help The Med recover millions in unpaid, unrecoverable medical costs, but provides funding for community medical clinics so our friends and neighbors will be able to seek medical care before their needs become so dire that an emergency room visit becomes necessary.

Such profound changes are never unopposed. The special interests that prospered under the old way of doing things are terrified of the changes brought on by this law, and they are working feverishly to try and replace all of us with representatives that will fight to undo the progress we have made.

While I have been working nonstop in Washington D.C., my opponent, Willie Herenton, has been misrepresenting me and my record, designing leaflets, and campaigning.

I ask you to stand beside me as I run for re-election to the United States Congress. Our Campaign Headquarters will open in April on Union Avenue near Kimbrough. When we are open for business, I invite you all to come down and help us as we continue Fighting for Memphis. I need you to have my back as I work for you and try to make you proud.
