C.O.P.S. Program
In May 2007, the House of Representatives voted on and overwhelmingly passed HR 1700, a bill that amends the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 to provide funding to hire 50,000 new policeman on the streets of the United States.
Unfortunately, the Senate has yet to take action on this bill. Our need for good policemen on the streets of our cities has never been greater. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that the total cost of implementing the bill would be $6 for every American over the course of 2008-12--- Far from a backbreaking amount for the kind of security that it would provide.
I recently took to the floor of the House once again after the Lester Street murders here to remind the Senate that America needs this law. And when I met with Presidential frontrunner Senator Barack Obama, this is one of the items we discussed.
I will keep pushing for this bill to become law for as long as it takes.
