Environment
I've always championed environmental issues. I know all too well that we fail, as a government and as a people, if we hand a world over to the next generation of children where it's hazardous to breathe the air, or where they cannot get a drink of clean water.
For my record on enviromental issues, theSierra Club has already endorsed my candidacy for Congress. League of Conservation Voters gave me a 95% score on their annual Score Card. The Defenders of Wildlife graded me at 100%. I'm quite honored by that, and I hope to continue geting high marks from them in the future.
I've cosponsored several pieces of legislation that are designed to address climate change, clean up the environment, and move us along the path to renewable energy sources.
- HR 39, the Udall-Eisenhower Arctic Wilderness Act, protects specified lands in the Arctic Natural Wildlife Reserve (ANWR) and puts them under the direct protection of the National Wilderness Preservation System.
- HR 550, the Securing America's Energy Indepence Act, instructs the Environmental Protection Agency to develop methods for increasing the market presence of biofuels and Ultra Low Sulfur Fuels, and to work on a means of making them more compatible with current engine technology.
- H.R. 1590, the Safe Climate Act , requires the EPA to set a target of 2% greenhouse gas reductions every year between 2010-2050.
- HR 620, the Climate Stewardship Act, creates a new system of market-driven, tradeable allowances to limit greenhouse emissions and move us along the path to energy independence.
This is only the beginning. Much more is to come.
