Cohen In the Media

The House is scheduled to take up a resolution (H.Res.194) next week "apologizing for the enslavement and racial segregation of African-Americans."

The resolution was introduced by Rep. Steve Cohen (Tenn.), a white Democrat who represents a majority African-American district in Memphis...

...Cohen's resolution, which will be taken up under suspension, meaning it must receive a two-thirds vote in order to pass. The resolution has 120 co-sponsors...

The Commercial Appeal
The confidence Rep. Steve Cohen has exuded in his campaign for re-election in Tennessee's Ninth Congressional District found some validation in the campaign financial disclosures filed Tuesday with the Federal Election Commission.

The Commercial Appeal
Like it or not -- and trust me, Tinker doesn't like it -- Cohen has a track record on civil rights and issues that affect people of color that's admirable.

And so far, her only argument is that it's time for change -- as she simultaneously touts endorsements from a string of old-timers.

The Memphis Flyer
"We've turned a corner," Cohen maintained. "Barack Obama, A C Wharton, and Steve Cohen are in the same boat, and it's a boat that's moving forward."

The Memphis Flyer
Cohen, repeating a theme he stressed throughout the debate, asked people to look at what he's done.

"I would like people to judge me on my record and my character, not on the color of my skin," Cohen said.

The Los Angeles Times:
Citing a 1961 Justice Department memo, Addington said the vice president, by virtue of being president of the Senate, was "attached" to the legislature.

"He is attached to a legislative branch?" asked Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.).

"That is the quote I read you," Addington said.

"So," Cohen said, "he is sort of a barnacle."

"I don't consider the Constitution a barnacle," Addington replied.

"No, the vice president," Cohen rejoined. "He is neither fish nor fowl, he is just attached to something."

The Commercial Appeal
Memphis City Schools board member Rev. Kenneth Whalum Jr. was on hand at the nation's Capitol Wednesday when U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen and U.S. Sen. Blanche Lincoln praised the Mid-South's gospel music heritage.

"I mentioned the fact that Elvis had three Grammys and all of them were gospel, and that WLOK in Memphis, Art Gilliam's station, was a gospel station celebrating its 50th anniversary," Cohen, D-Tenn., said after the program of speeches and singing.

"Gospel music is important to the musical tradition of America but particularly in Memphis."

Olbermann: Tinker "Worst Person in the World"

EMILY's List Condemns Tinker Ad Campaign

From Politico:

EMILY’s List president Ellen Malcolm issued a statement Wednesday evening condemning Tinker’s most recent ad.  The group, which endorses Democratic women who favor abortion rights, has been Tinker's most prominent backer.

“We were shocked to see the recent ads run by the Nikki Tinker for Congress campaign. We believe the ads are offensive and divisive,” said Malcolm. EMILY's List does not condone or support these types of attacks.”

Commercial Appeal: "Tinker Lowers Bar in the 9th"

"One thing that's sure to happen every election cycle is that at least one candidate will try to get elected by appealing to our worst instincts.

Nikki Tinker's despicable effort to link Rep. Steve Cohen to the Ku Klux Klan is an illustration in the extreme.

Tinker, who is African-American, insists that her decision to run for the 9th District seat held by Cohen, who's white, is not about race. "I've said all along I'm trying to represent all of Memphis," Tinker told the editorial board of The Commercial Appeal.

The position doesn't square with Tinker's latest attack ad, which features footage of a Ku Klux Klan rally as Tinker supporter Walter Bailey challenges Cohen's July 2005 vote on the Center City Commission not to recommend the removal of a statue of Confederate general Nathan Bedford Forrest from the Medical Center park.

The vote has little relevance to the consistently strong civil rights record Cohen has built during 24 years of service in the Tennessee Senate and two years as the representative of the majority-black 9th Congressional District."

The Commercial Appeal Endorses Steve Cohen For Congress

The Commercial Appeal has made its endorsement in the 9th District Congressional Race:

...In 2006 on this page, the editorial board said that experience, and how that experience could be used to help the 9th District, should be the deciding factors in the race. With that in mind, we endorsed longtime state senator STEVE COHEN in both the primary and the general election to replace Ford. This year, we think voters should send Cohen back to Washington for a second term...

...During his first term in Congress, Cohen, a 24-year veteran of the state Senate, used the skills he honed as a state legislator to build relationships within and across party lines that have helped him make an impact on the national and local stage. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi calls Cohen, a 59-year-old native Memphian, the "conscience of the freshman class," citing his votes on issues such as increasing the minimum wage and extending unemployment benefits.

He has been instrumental in getting federal grants for Memphis International Airport, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the University of Tennessee's biocontainment lab and other local colleges and city schools.

With a first term under his belt, Cohen stands to be even more effective in a U.S. House with a Democratic majority that is expected to grow after the November elections...

Wendi Thomas Analyzes the 9th District Congressional Race

An excerpt from Wendi Thomas's analysis of the 9th District Congressional campaign:

Poor U.S. Rep Steve Cohen.

The first-term congressman from the Ninth District just can't catch a break.

He's a white man representing a district that's predominately black, a fact that has drawn the ire of a number of outspoken black ministers.

And he's a man running in the August primary against a black woman who just landed a plum endorsement from pro-choice EMILY's List.

If Cohen was vulnerable, this might signal trouble.

But he's done enough -- symbolic and of substance -- in his first two years to sail to a second term.

Congressman Cohen Talks Health Care with The Commercial Appeal

Congressman Steve Cohen made the case for increased funding for medical research in The Commercial Appeal:

"I think it's awful we're spending so much money in Iraq, killing people, when we could be spending money on research, saving people's lives," said Cohen, D-Memphis, during a tour of the Cancer Research Building at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.

"And if we do that, we're going be heroes to people around the world, when we help save the lives of children and adults."
